Award of Excellence for Krzysztof Chylinski

Krzysztof Chylinski, former PhD student in the lab of Emmanuelle Charpentier and Renée Schroeder at MFPL, has received one of this year’s Awards of Excellence for his doctoral thesis. The Award of Excellence is a national prize that is awarded by the Federal Ministry for Science, Research and Economics to the 40 best dissertations of the academic year since 2008. The prize is endowed with €3,000 and proposals for candidates are made by the Austrian universities. We congratulate Krzysztof to this fantastic achievement.

Krzysztof started his doctoral studies at MFPL in Autumn 2008, when he joined the team of Emmanuelle Charpentier under co-supervision of Renée Schroeder to work on RNA-binding proteins in S. pyogenes. Soon after, their scientific interests moved to characterization of type II CRISPR-Cas – bacterial immunity system, the main topic of Krzysztof’s dissertation. Together with his lab colleagues and collaborators, he was studying the molecular mechanism and later, diversity and evolution of type II CRISPRs. Their work resulted in several highly cited publications, including papers in Nature and Science, and attracted a wide interest after they proposed and gave guidelines to utilization of type II CRISPR as a genome-editing tool, known now as CRISPR/Cas9.

Since August 2014, Krzysztof continues working on CRISPR/Cas9 at CSF ProTech, where together with Peggy Stolt-Bergner they established a CRISPR-Lab – research and service unit concentrating on technology optimization and helping VBC researchers in successful CRISPR/Cas9 utilization. Part of the funding for CRISPR Lab comes from a BRIDGE grant awarded to CSF together with partner Eucodis Bioscience.
