Nuclei were categorized as belonging to one of three stages of meiotic prophase, Leptotene, Zygotene and Pachytene, based on the different extent of synapsis, visualized by anti Zip1 antibody. When diploid cells carry only a single copy of the Zip1 gene, synapsis remains incomplete in most cells. At the same time interference was reduced, while crossover formation was unaffected.
